Bed Bugs - a nasty epidemic

New York and other large urban centers are particularly vulnerable as there are a lot of people concentrated in a relatively small area. Contrary to popular belief cleanliness has nothing to do with whether or not you might have a bed bug infestation. It use to be thought that only poor people would be susceptible to bed bug infestations, but we now know that potentially anyone can be a victim. In fact, people of means are more at risk as they are more likely to travel and spend time in hotels - a common hub for bed bugs.

There are certain things that you can do as preventative measures when dealing with bed bugs. Bed bugs are notoriously difficult to get rid of once you get them, so it pays to be vigilant.

If you travel a lot, you should be very careful. Bed bugs can piggy back on world travelers very easily. In fact this is the number one mode of transportation for bed bugs today. Their Grand Central Station would be hotel rooms around the world. They inhabit beds in hotels waiting for the next victim to enter. They will feed on the traveler's blood and then return to their hiding places. But some will hide in open luggage or possibly lay eggs in clothing left about the hotel room.

If you travel frequently, you should always check your room for bed bugs the second you enter the door. You can complete this check in about 10 minutes, so there really is no reason not to do it. How Do You Know If You Have Bed Bugs has an easy to follow checklist for frequent travelers.
